7 acne myths that keep skin
breaking out

Most of what people do about acne comes from advice that was never true. Here is the list.

01

"Acne means your skin is dirty"

Acne is a pore problem, not a hygiene problem. Washing harder strips the barrier and makes oily skin oilier. Clean skin can break out; over-washed skin breaks out more.

Washing the face
THE FIX

Wash twice a day with a pH-balanced cleanser, and stop there.

02

"Toothpaste dries out a pimple"

Toothpaste irritates skin — that is why the spot looks smaller for a day and angrier after. It does nothing about the plug in the pore.

Serum drop
THE FIX

An oil-soluble acid does the drying-out job properly: salicylic acid dissolves into the plug itself.

03

"The sun clears acne"

A tan hides redness for a week. UV then thickens the surface, which clogs pores further, and turns every healed spot into a dark mark that lasts months.

Applying sunscreen
THE FIX

Daily sunscreen is part of acne care, not a separate concern.

04

"Oily skin shouldn't moisturise"

Dehydrated skin makes more oil to compensate. Skipping moisturiser is one of the fastest routes to shinier, more congested skin.

Aloe
THE FIX

A light, non-comedogenic moisturiser at night, after the serum.

05

"Scrub harder"

Physical scrubs abrade the surface and spread inflammation across the face. The plug inside the pore is untouched.

Face wash foam
THE FIX

Let a leave-on acid do the exfoliating — no grit required.

06

"Popping it gets it over with"

Squeezing pushes the contents deeper and tears the pore wall. That is how a week-long spot becomes a months-long mark or a scar.

Sunscreen gel
THE FIX

Leave it. Treat the zone at night with the serum and protect it in the morning.

07

"You'll grow out of it"

Adult acne is common, especially on the jaw and chin, and it follows oil and hormones, not age. Waiting is not a plan.

Applying serum
THE FIX

A steady routine — wash, serum, sunscreen — works at any age.

The routine

How it fits into a day

Morning: wash, then sunscreen
AM
Wash, then sunscreen
A minute with the face wash, rinse, pat dry. Two finger-lengths of sunscreen across face and neck.
Night: wash, then serum
PM
Wash, then serum
Cleanse the same way. On dry skin, two to three drops of serum across the breakout-prone zone, then a light moisturiser.
Cleansing
WK 1–2
Ease in
Serum on alternate nights for the first two weeks, then nightly if skin is comfortable.
